Garden Club

A Gardening Club for blind and visually impaired people has been established and meets twice per fortnight to work in the Sensory Garden in Barley Mow Park. This project is supported by the Parks Department of Sunderland City Council’s Community and Cultural Services and the Friends of Backhouse and Barley Mow Parks. Advice and support is given by Thrive – the National Blind Gardeners Club.

The aim of the garden is to provide a contained area that concentrates a wide range of sensory experiences including sight, sound, touch and smell. The Gardening Club is open to any visually impaired person who wishes to be involved with the management of the garden.

We have recently won an award for our sensory garden, click here to find out more.
