The exciting news is that we have reached our target of £14,900 to pay for a training kitchen to be installed here at Pallion for use by our Rehab Workers to teach kitchen skills. It will also be used for healthy cooking demonstrations, etc.
This was the first time we have used “Crowdfunding” which is a way of attracting project funding via the internet.
The pledges include £9,000 from Sunderland City Council and £5,000 from the Integrated Care Partnership. The remainder is from individual supporters.

Thank you to all those who made a pledge and please continue to donate to the Society so that we can continue to serve the residents of Sunderland and County Durham.

We wish to provide a specially designed training kitchen suitable for people who are visually impaired. This will include adjustable height work tops for wheel chair users and those who cannot stand for long periods, an oven at eye level, a separate hob, a sink with mixer taps to avoid scolding, a talking microwave and strategically placed lighting. Bumpons will be fitted to the electrical equipment enabling those with sight loss to locate the controls safely. Work tops and units will be colour coordinated to enable those who are visually impaired to find their way around more easily. The Society’s Rehabilitation Workers will utilise the facilities in order to teach daily living skills to people who are visually impaired, improve confidence and lead to the regaining of independence in their own home.

What we’ll deliver:

  • Purchase a specialist training kitchen and equipment
  • Installation of kitchen
  • Professional training provided by Vision Rehabilitation Workers
  • Installation of safe flooring

Why it’s a great idea:

The ability to demonstrate safe working within a kitchen environment for those with a vision impairment will increase confidence and enable then to continue to live an independent safe life in their own home.
